A Northern Canadian Wilderness Experience of Hiking and Flying and Camping in the South Nahanni Ranges of the Mackenzie Mountains of Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Hike, fly by helicopter, and camp with us in the silent, endless, empty mountains of Canada’s South Nahanni Ranges in the Mackenzie Mountains of the Northwest Territories. Join us in our effortless, helicopter assisted NWT hiking adventures. Follow your dreams into an inaccessible, forgotten place. Run with caribou, search for fossils, set foot in canyons, on mountain ridges, in the UNESCO World Heritage site of South Nahanni National Park Reserve. Be the soaring eagle over never ceasing mountain scenery, perch wherever freedom takes you, feel the thrill of wild places no other human has ever been to. We will guide you gently through a land of northern silence, allowing you a breathtaking experience of solitude.
The essence of helicopter hiking is to experience the mountain beauties on two feet but to get there as effortlessly as a bird on the wing. The Nahanni is so utterly remote that it can only truly be accessed by helicopter. Our Bell 206 Jetranger will lift you effortlessly and safely, easily leapfrogging mountain ranges, leaving you to enjoy the greater view from above.
Our hikes are tailored to all levels of fitness, experience and age. With group sizes of approx. 2 clients this is essentially a customized trip. Your input will determine the daily flights and hikes.
- 7, 10 and 12-day trips with emphasis on Wildlife, Geology, or Exploring
- Wildlife: dall sheep, mountain goats, caribou, moose, wolves, bears
- Fossils of the former ocean floors like Ammonites, Corals, Sea Shells, Trilobites
- Geological formations ranging from Karsts to Sedimentary to Granite, Hot Springs, Tufa mounds, Caves, Sink Holes, Arches, Glaciers, to the antecedent River of the South Nahanni and its 4 km deep Canyons
- A wealth of scenery: high alpine, valleys, rivers, gravel bars, shale slopes, far away vistas, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, rocky canyons, grey undulating mountains scored through with the colours of the rainbow
Our base camp offers all amenities in the middle of nowhere: shower, great kitchen, washing machine, cozy cabins and a happy atmosphere.
While out exploring, we camp in small domed tents. Weight is an issue when flying so food is then mostly freeze-dried but tasty as well as nutritious with additional gourmet perks.
Solitude Excursions take place in the south-western Mackenzie Mountains of Canada’s Northwest Territories, bordering the Yukon to the west and boreal forests to the east. Departure point is Fort Simpson, NWT.
The area consists of mountains ranges, northern spruce and wild rivers. Stitched into this immensity are Karsts (Ram Plateau), the largest glacier field in NWT, the small eyes of stunningly green lakes, the spires of the Ragged Range with the Cirque of Unclimbables, the tufa mounds at Rabbitkettle Lake, Virginia Falls - the highest in Canada, and the snaking green of the South Nahanni way down deep in 4,000 feet (1,2 km) high canyon walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Solitude Excursions is family owned and operated by Werner Aschbacher and Sunny Petersen. Over the past 20 years we have worked in different branches of outfitting, ranging as far as Australia, Europe and S. America with the majority of it in the Canadian West and North.
Outfitting isn’t our job; it is our way of life because of our love of wilderness, bush flying, wildlife and independence. Our commitment not only extends to our business and clients, but to the South Nahanni ranges of the Mackenzie Mountains, by which we are spellbound.
We dedicate ourselves to keeping this land the way it is right now – absolutely and entirely WILD.
